wolves-at-bay-i-was-the-devil-once-reviewYesterday I had every intention of getting an early start. My list of things to write was long, but I knew I could get through them…Then there came a contest where you could win the chance to speak at the unveiling of Backstreet Boys’ star on the Walk of Fame. So I spent most of the day writing and (hopefully) perfecting a 60 second declaration of love that will win me this chance. A mere distraction from my favorite musical act led me to put off Wolves At Bay’s I Was The Devil Once. I apologize for the later than I wanted post, for the record had some enjoyable moments of anguished indie rock with a smidge of softened hardcore.

Things started off great with me and I Was The Devil Once. I could see myself in “Hide Like My Friends,” because if you’ve read anything else I’ve written in the past year; I am a hermit. Other than the lyrics, this song was able to keep my attention because the energy at which it was displayed was the best of the entire record; smart choice putting it first. “Know Why” was just okay and “Forget Who I Was” was the other song that I kept reminding myself to be alert to. Give it a listen if you’ve lost who you were recently and let this song guide you back.

It wasn’t all a good time though. For me it fell off around “Still Afraid,” and didn’t come back to me until we rounded out the record with “I Was The Devil Once.” Luckily the start and finish line for the record are strong enough to hold up the others.

Wolves At Bay’s I Was The Devil Once was supposed to be a Tuesday entry in my life, but my teeny bopper heart got the best of me. I had to sit and enjoy the post-hardcore-indie ways of this record much later than I wanted, but it was worth the wait, even though just a day. People into bands like Sainthood Reps and Caravels shouldn’t let anything or one distract them from checking out Wolves At Bay’s I Was The Devil Once, out April 16th on Animal Style Records.
