Multitasking by debating whether or not to go get a tattoo today while writing about Justin Timberlake and listening to Foreign Talks; that was my morning. Not even the afternoon yet and I’m still undecided about the tattoo, I’m done with Mr. Suit and Tie and have moved on to writing about Foreign Talk’s self-titled album. I go into almost every album with an open mind and don’t like to research the band beforehand; it skews the listening process. So when the tracks started to unroll, it was a nice surprise to end up with an album that offered up some indie pop with a little street cred.
Before I get to the big reveal as if this is Extreme Home Makeover and I’m about to move…that…bus, I am going to let you know about a couple songs that left me wondering who the person these particular songs are about. I am assuming one girl was the reason behind “Denial” and “Hello.” “Denial” a song that can only be described as sultry, inviting indie pop, and “Hello,” the other side of the relationship; the dark side.
Now to the surprise I would’ve never saw coming on Foreign Talks, the tongue twister delivery that could be likened to an MC. “NW Wonka” had laid back choruses, but each verse was as hyper as a kid in a chocolate factory. “Falling Leaves” was the same format, and just as enticing.
Foreign Talks has a lot of down time, but the energy in the fast paced ones and the love songs are the reasons I’d listen to this album a few more times before heading out to possibly add a new tattoo to my collection. If you’re into bands like Oceanics and that little Voice hopeful Mackenzie Bourg, then it’s worth checking out Foreign Talks self-titled, out April 16th on Expunged Records.
