ONSLO: A Taste of Purple

onlso-a-taste-of-purple-reviewWhen you think you’re unique and weird, just know that there is someone out there who has you beat. Yes, I have the occasional conversation with a cork that I drew a face on that sits by my front door when I head to get the mail, but there are people out there who actually marry corks. That makes me less weird to a degree. The idea of being odd came up when ONSLO’s A Taste of Purple came on. They’re post-rock style mixed with a psychedelic sound made me forget any other album I’d deemed “weird,” because this one took the cake.

“Can You Beat Up A Murderer?” was the least bizarre of the bunch, and that’s even including the title. Then once I got past that one, “Pappy Sugar” started and I felt like I was on some hallucinogens. It was trippy, like I was submerged in tie-dye and in the 90’s playing hacky sack.  With everything that came through, it was “Hot Cream I” and it’s partner “Hot Cream II” that caught me off guard the most. The first was this heavy string instrumental that sounded like an epic video game battle, the other sounding the like the victorious celebration after the battle. What were they about? Oh, I have no clue. They’re both just instrumentals, but were able to capture me, so they might do the same to you.

When I hear ONSLO’s A Taste of Purple, I can’t help but envision those kids in high school who are in band and dress in a manner that represents who they are, not who you want them to be; original kids. Those kids that you might’ve not had the balls to ever be like because you didn’t want to be judged, those are ONSLO’s kind of people. If you’re a fan of bands like They Might Be Giants and Wheatus, then you’re likely to be open minded to ONSLO. A Taste of Purple is out now.
