small-parks-meet-me-in-cognito-reviewFor the most part I’m in a good place in my life and most sad songs, the ones I would’ve sworn were tailor made for me, are now reminders of how I once felt. I’m not happy 100% of the time. I mean I am human, but I no longer contemplate the bad side of a bad day. I’m knocking on wood as I write this to ensure I don’t jinx myself. While I’m okay, there are still people out there who feel like the weight of the world is only sitting on their shoulders, that if there is a higher being…he/she hates them and if there was any way to feel better, they wouldn’t know it. Those people should check out Small Parks’ Meet Me In Cognito. It’s for those who are feeling below the normal level of content, and want a musical friend who feels the same.

The term “emo” seems so dated, but alas Meet Me In Cognito is just that with indie intentions. “Undone” starts things off, and wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t the next two tracks that seem to be the best bets to lean on during a rough time. “Shifting Positions” seemed to be about thoughts of ending something, but being afraid to do so. Their life, a relationship? Either or, it’s a telling track and definitely a must-listen on the record. Here is where I play favorites and tell you “Everything Is Part of It” is the finest you’re going to get from this EP, bottom line. It’s all about feeling like shit even though the people that surround you don’t feel that way, and feeling guilty about enjoying solitude more than the company we keep. I’m a loner 80% of the time, and can relate to a degree. Sometimes it’s nicer to head out on your own than to drag someone along.

Whether or not you’re going through some shit and want some music to help ease things, or you’re a fan of bands like Seahaven and Brand New, then you’ll be doing yourself a solid by checking out Small Parks. Meet Me In Cognito is out April 8th on Triple Deke Records.
