Caravels: Lacuna

caravels-lacuna-reviewThank you lady for ruining my day by insisting I was a boy based on a photo. You’ve really made my self-esteem land at all-time low. I was on track to being on time with everything I had planned this morning. Caravels’ Lacuna was all ready to go and then that lady’s call burst any sort of “gonna have a good day” bubble I had floating around. I sat with Lacuna playing and just got lost in the melodic hardcore of the album, the words weren’t able to hit me the first run through as I continued to be bummed by that lady’s call, but the second time through I heard a little more and started to feel a little better.

It seems that bands like Caravels are the result of a lot of late nights spent listening to Suicidal Tendencies and Dashboard Confessional. Yes, those are two very different bands, but Caravels seem to embrace the abrupt delivery style of Suicidal Tendencies, taking on that sort of talk/sing style, but are able to capture the emotion of life with the lyrics as well. The results are songs like “Having Had & Lost Some Infinite Thing” which seems to be about change, and “Hundred Years,” a song I took as about living to the full capacity. Each song is rough around the edges vocally, that’s the hardcore, but the melodic comes more in the music itself. The two variables balance one another out, especially in my favorite, “Hanging Off.”

It’s been almost an hour since that woman shattered any confidence I started out today with, but thanks to a few journeys through Lacuna, I think I’ll be fine. I might go eat my feelings, but I’ll be fine. So if you’re into bands like We Were Skeletons and My Fictions, then you’re going to definitely be into Caravels. Lacuna is out on March 26th on Topshelf Records, so mark your digital calendars and don’t forget about it.
