Sink Swim: Heights

sink-swim-heights-reviewAdele just high fived James Bond. Wait, what? I’m sitting here watching the Golden Globes and on commercial breaks I’m listening to Sink Swim’s new EP Heights. Trying to multitask is rough as I sit on the floor draped in a blanket because I lack a Snuggie, but I’m doing my best to try and wrap my head around this album by a band I fell in love with just a couple months ago. When I heard Sink Swim’s Elements, I was instantly hooked to their pop rock style that sounded as innocent as freshman on their first day of college. Now with Heights, it appears that they’ve grown and are ready to join bands that have more oomph when it comes to attitude and grit.

Fans of Sink Swim’s other EP will find that the vocals still carry similarities to Artist VS Poet in tracks like “Tides.” You can still hear that youth in the vocals, but they take on more attitude towards the middles and musically this song shifts the mood for the whole album. “Pull Together” starts slow and is like the child of Heights and Elements. It has a new found edge, but also incorporates a softer side with the help of Alexa San Roman. “Move Me” kicks ass in the chorus department, but it’s “Perfect on Paper” that holds the album up as it’s the strongest song of the batch.

The Golden Globes have ended (if you didn’t watch, here, you’re welcome), and so has my time with Heights. When I started my love affair with Sink Swim I was swept away by the sweet sounds that made up Elements, now I’m learning grow along with them to keep the passion alive with this Southern California band. Heights is like listening to There For Tomorrow with a little more adrenaline, but doesn’t stray too far from pop rock in entirety. Sink Swim’s Heights is out now.
