Last night the internet was void of pictures of dinners and cats because of the election, but don’t worry…It’s back to normal today, so go ahead and post your lunch. We’re all waiting in anticipation (only not really). Now that the excitement of the election is over and we’re assured four more years with Obama, life can resume and I can get back to discovering new music. Today it’s Slingshot Dakota’s Dark Hearts; a dark take on indie pop with a female lead.

After listening to Dark Hearts a few times through, I started to pass songs that sounded too much like one another. “Starting Over” and “Light” were like things you see every day, nothing out of the ordinary. But I will say that “Light” had a line that reminded me oh too well of people I know who think liking the rain makes them deep, so they hate on the California sun more often than not…“I keep waiting for it to get better. I keep blaming this on the weather.”

While there were some songs that failed to reach out and grab me, there were a couple that had a good grasp of my attention span. “May Day” sounded like the happiest tune in the world, but then the lyrics settled in my brain waves and I was like, shit, this isn’t happy at all. It’s like a bipolar tale. The music might make you smile, but it’s riddled with lines about the world ending and waiting to die.  The other go to song on Dark Hearts is “Cassette.” It’s the tale of a botched relationship, and if there’s an indie movie looking for the soundtrack to the break-up scene, look no further.

Slingshot Dakota wins my vote as long as “Cassette” is on the ballot. If you’re into bands like Belle Historie and Allison Weiss, then I’m telling you to check out Slingshot Dakota right now. Dark Hearts is out now on Topshelf Records, so get on it.
