If one didn’t know it was Election Day today, the endless Facebook statuses and Tweets would remind them. It verges on annoying, but I guess it’s good people are that into politics every four years. It’s cute to think the government has the people’s interests in mind. Instead of heading to the polls at the crack of dawn I was in dream land, then I woke up to an album that sure did its job at making my eyes pop open, Great Lakes USA’s Live Fast, Die Whenever; a record that’s a huge dose of rock with a punk mentality.
You can never know what lyrics mean to an artist if you: 1. Don’t know what the artist was thinking or 2. Have no clue what the artist is really saying, literally. With the idea of walking 15 minutes to and from my local polling place in mind, “No Girlfriend” took a political route for me when I made out the line “accept the lies they tell.” No matter how great you think your candidate is…They’re all sugarcoating their words. It’s no wonder diabetes is on the rise in America. The best part about “No Girlfriends” was that it not only started the record with a fast, full throttle approach, but it helped round out the record. See Great Lakes USA start with that and ends with “No Boyfriends,” which is a lot calmer than the other. Not sure what the symbolism of that’s supposed to mean.
One other political thing my mind stumbled upon was in “Rambling Dudes Forever” when a red and blue pill was mentioned. Okay that’s the last one, now moving on…Of course I’m going to have to favor “Grown Up Stuff” because I too don’t go out at night to live the expected “norm” of an adult. Another one to note is “Let’s Face It, This Sucks.” Not because it impressed the whole way through, but because at the end there was a little Goo Goo Dolls. The unexpected surprise of it left me confused but then with a smile.
If you start with no lady friends and end with no guy friends, you’re left alone with nothing but your thoughts and the music, so it might as well be Great Lakes USA’s Live Fast, Die Whenever. That’s if you like bands like A Wilhelm Scream and This is a Standoff of course. If not, then you might just want to sit by your lonesome…Live Fast, Die Whenever is out today, Election Day, so pick it up if it sounds like something you’d be into.
