Before Twitter we had to keep every 140 character thought trapped inside our heads. Now, we can muse about everything from politics to what we had for lunch. Our ancestors are somewhere wondering…really? This is what they’re doing with language? Creating words like “feels” and “birfday” Yup, but not everyone on the social site uses it to dumb down their existence. Some have fashioned it as a place of discovery. Just take Josh Cain of Motion City Soundtrack for instance. He asked his followers to suggest some new music and there came The Skies Revolt, and now they’re a part of Motion City’s Making Moves series, coming in at Volume 5.

The Skies Revolt is an indie rock band from Grand Rapids, Michigan who look like they could’ve just crawled out of Seattle circa 1993 thanks to their flannel parts and beards and that Jonathan Taylor Thomas picture they’re sporting on their Facebook. Musically they rely on a crash course in the vocal department. They come together well enough to convey a unity while expressing idea of happiness being bad “For Your Health.” Well, that’s at least what I heard. While it was a great song to bob my head to, it was a bit too long. My mind wandered more than once to shiny objects about the room.

“Green Dress In A Scene” uses the same formula as “For Your Health,” okay verses with stronger choruses. This song sounded like a song about childhood with the mention of “recess” and “innocence” with it ending with “you don’t have to follow through.” So through the electronics tossed about, I guessed this would be the perfect song for a high school or college kid to listen to.  Forget the plans you made years ago…they don’t always work out.

With the Making Moves series being quick EPs, The Skies Revolt end with “Germaine Throws It Up.” It depended way more on the electronic ways of the band than the other songs and for that reason alone made it sound like something the guys in Weird Science would’ve listened to.

Since The Skies Revolt was picked up on Twitter, I am going to try and sum up the album in a Twitter like fashion: The Skies Revolt Making Moves Vol. 5 is indie with electronics tossed in that’ll make an impression on fans of Take One Car and I Am Alaska.

Making Moves Vol. 5 is out October 23rd, so pick it up and enjoy.
