Sheppard: Sheppard

Taylor Swift just came out with a new single that is void of her Country roots. It’s just a pop song…and at first I hated it due to the conversational parts and the fact that it was just another song about some celebrity who broke her heart. A week later I couldn’t get enough of it and must’ve abused that YouTube repeat button countless times. Point? I can’t deny pop music, in any form…Be it the dough eyed dramatics of Katy Perry to the Indie Pop tactics of Australia’s Sheppard on their debut, self-titled EP.

Take a brother and his two sisters, add a trio of friends and you have the band Sheppard, and like I said before, they are ready and willing to share their Indie Pop with the world. They’re lead single “Let Me Down Easy” starts out and you think that maybe you’re listening to “Some Nights” by Fun due to the chorus like group vocals, but then are lead into a very cheery tune. As soon as “Hold My Tongue” started I jotted down Oceanics. Coincidentally they’re also an Aussie band who possesses that beach vibe in their musical endeavors.

Sheppard does a great job at balancing who takes lead vocals, but sorry boys, girl power reigns supreme as “I’m Not A Whore” is the song to check out. There’s never been another song that delivers words like “whore,” “bitchin’” and “bullshit” in such a sweet way. Although the vocals make this song sound cute and innocent, it’s actually one of the best post break up songs to come along in recent years. I write for numerous blogs and couldn’t help but be reminded of a piece I did on a young celebrity couple earlier that day…Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, this one’s for you girl!

Sheppard’s self-titled EP is suggested for those who like pop music, but aren’t a fan of the mainstream acts like my beloved Katy, and want something more laid back, but still has that catchy factor. Fans of The Royalty and Gold Motel will want to check out Sheppard, out now.
