In 2002 there were an abundance of timeless records that came out and this year those of us who weren’t down with the mainstream of Hip-Hop or for the time being, traded in our pop for pop punk, are celebrating with some of the most amazing 10 year anniversary shows this fall with bands like New Found Glory, The Starting Line and of course Taking Back Sunday. All those bands are responsible for influencing not only myself, but the gaggle of new bands who flood the AbsolutePunk.Net homepage every day, State Champs included. Their upstate New York brand of pop punk on their new EP Overslept is hyper, catchy and likely to be on iPods of every kid sporting a “Defend Pop Punk” tee in homeroom.
“Remedy” has a great musical intro, lacks getting to the main show but then makes up for it once it officially starts. It wasn’t the song that made me want to keep on going though, that title belongs to “We Are the Brave.” That song is quintessential pop punk at its best. Any fan of the above old school bands has to have a place in their mindset for a good set of lyrics, and this track is on point with that with, “I’m not a monster. I’m just misunderstood.” I loathe people who consistently Tweet lyrics, but I’ll let it slide if it’s that one. State Champs don’t only know how to create a good selection of pop punk and write an attention getter, but actually have vocal chops. Check out “Critical” to hear the A Loss For Words similarities.
10 years ago there were a ton of bands out there and today only a select few are still celebrated. I’m not a psychic and don’t even know where to begin when predicting which bands from the pop punk pool of 2012 will be doing anniversary tours in 2022. So I’m just going to live in the present and let you know that State Champs’ Overslept is in a class with With The Punches and I Call Fives, so enjoy it now, because that’s the only moment that one can be certain of.
