Earlier this year, Belle Histoire released their EP, I Can Tell. And I can tell you it made me incredibly anxious for their full-length album, Dreamers.
Dreamers is an album that is exactly that – people with wishes and thoughts all geared towards a purpose that seems impossible. These tracks are like stars glimmering with messages that are simultaneously filled with paranoia and faith. Of the eleven songs, “Home” and “Keep Your Heart,” embodies that inner skeptic, the one who paces with the undying question, “what if?” Generously, Belle Histoire’s lead singer, Jane Smith, embraces those doubts and offers reassurance to the insecure.
Laced between the soft keys lurks a greater entity – fear. But for someone who constantly seeks comfort in sources aside from friends, family, and psychologists, Belle Histoire put to rest my greatest phobia…and if you’re so interested in exactly what that is, listen to “My Dear.” When listening to this track, a mirror followed me.
Themes and words aside, the music is equally captivating. Smith’s voice is at times casual, but other times sweeter than choir girl’s. Like A Fine Frenzy, there’s tranquility, but there is an element of rock and ruggedness, beauties and beasts. Some songs are more upbeat than others with a pop feel (“Kids”), while others are soft indie ballads (“Ghost”). Musically, there’s a selection, a song for every kind of anxiety.
