It’s lunch time and I’ve eaten a meal fit for a kindergartner; peanut butter and jelly with a side of cosmic brownie. My arteries beg to differ, but what do they know? That’s the thing, you have things out there that are good for you and then you have the things you want, crave even. That’s how I felt with A Hero A Fake’s The Future Again. After years of shows without earplugs, my ears need soft music like Matchbox Twenty (who I love more than life at times…seriously, Rob Thomas, marry me?). So A Hero A Fake’s thrash metal, hardcore style isn’t what was audibly right, but something in me yearned for it.
Possibly that need for rage? Yeah, let’s call it that. While being old at Warped Tour this year in Ventura, my friends and I just sat there and listened to the stage that was all about hardcore and made the older folks there for Taking Back Sunday a little scared of the youths (New Girl, don’t watch? Missing out). It’s music you put on when your mood mirrors a taunted bull, or it’s what you like if your musical palette is heavier than most. “Port Hole” is downright intimidating when it starts off and “Mechanical Heart” has those death growls that render casual encounters of A Hero A Fake spooked out. Basically a metal fan? This is for you. Not into that? Than just skip on to something else.
“Wild Fires” was a bit ironic at first. The title suggested this out of control burst, but it seemed tame…Then after a minute of buildup, there it was. Listeners were then engulfed in the musical flame set off by A Hero A Fake. The fire never settled down after that as “Wasted Miles” and “I Have a Knife” would’ve caused a concerned parent to take away my iPod. Thankfully I’m 25 and even if I was 14, my mom was a cool mom (not as cool as Mean Girls).
After all that, A Hero A Fake served as my cool off music. Instead of my being frustrated with my future being unemployed in a couple weeks and the fact that I can’t work up the balls to tell the guy I like, “hey you look cute in specs,” I just put all that rage into what I was listening to. Thanks A Hero A Fake. Venting musically might not be the reason you pick up The Future Again, but do you have a reason not to? It’s out on Victory Records July 17th and remember, if you like it loud, pissed hardcore as a wall of death, than A Hero A Fake’s The Future Again is waiting for you.
