One summer night me and a friend sat up till the wee hours of the morning researching Legends of the Hidden Temple. I can imagine the members of Silver Snakes have had many nights like that. And unlike Olmec, these Silver Snakes are all real rock on their new album, Pictures of a Floating World.
All the way through “Lungs and Lanterns” I kept repeating in my head, “who do they sound like?” I never solved the case and the song left me feeling like a dude on prom night who took a girl with a promise ring; wanting more. A lot of tension in the verses, but never a climax., but that’s okay because “New Light” kept me in a trance. I wasn’t a fan at first but the more it played, the more I wanted to hear it.
But the gold medal goes to “Echo Eyes.” The title gives away the intro due to its distant sound as if in a cave looking for a treasure in the form of a song. The way the lyrics are delivered turn this treasure hunt into a movie found late night on Cinemax really fast; sex is in the voice. Another element that I may be reading too much into, that the band may or may not have done intentionally is in “I Am the Flood.” The chaotic intro mimics the actions of water claiming whatever comes in its way.
While you’re searching for the hidden meanings behind the songs, make sure to grab some Silver Snakes’ Pictures of a Floating World. It’s a rock record that will be a great addition to Moving Mountains and Thursday fans’ collections.
