When the term “emo” came into play I was sitting in an Invader Zim shirt and that one dude was screaming about hair being everywhere. It was like a fancy, fashionable new way to look at Gothic to me – minus the ghosts and ghoulish appearance. It was all about the emotions and whatnot. Now I’m almost 30 and going to these “Emo Nights” in LA every month and dancing to Taking Back Sunday and still upset over Brand New (I don’t get them).
People my age have a special connection to that emo realm and Meet me in Montauk are some of the guys who definitely relate. While they live in Fresno, I’m sure they’d be down for an Emo Night or two if they wanted to make that drive. They are sad, rad and you’re about to get to know them a whole lot more if you keep on keeping on with the words below.
Kendra: Out of all the people in Fresno, you guys were the four saddest who found one another?
Logan Jensen: Probably not the SADDEST people in Fresno, we’re not sad all the time. We probably couldn’t be a band if we were all sad all at the same time haha.
Kendra: Now onto your emo jams. By the time this goes up the Oscars will be said and done, but if where the grass meets the pavement was the soundtrack to one of the Best Picture nominees, which would it fit with best and why?
Logan: As for the best picture nominee we think our album would best fit in, Boyhood is probably the most obvious, just because it deals with trying to cope with things like hardship or loss from an early age. But even more obvious is how cool it would be to be a part of the soundtrack for Birdman, i mean come on.
Kendra: You just shot a video for “Poor Me.” How was that experience? Anything unexpected about the process that came up?
Logan: Shooting “Poor Me” was a pretty fun, relatively painless process. We all like to joke around a lot, and there was like eight of us in our drummer Logan’s apartment while we’re trying to film. Four of them are playing Fifa 14 on mute and trying (failing) to be quiet enough so the other four could shoot their part in the video. Well if you’ve played Fifa, then you know that trying to stay quiet while your own goalie kicks the ball into your goal isn’t happening. All the scenes in the apartment were really the hardest part because everybody was laughing too much for us to shoot anything. After that the rest was cake. We used a projector in the band shots and projected some glitch art that our friend Rico made onto us, its awesome stuff!
Kendra: What’s a piece of advice that looking back, “You Should Have Listened” to?
Logan: You should all have listened to your parents/gym teacher/wise gas station clerk when they told you to start building your credit. Cool, expensive shit like cars, music gear, and places to live are way harder to get without it!
Kendra: When are people going to get to see you all live?
Logan: As of right now, we don’t have any local shows coming up. We’ve been busy getting a lot of stuff made for the album. We’ve been doing everything ourselves, like, making tapes, buttons, shirts and we’re working on some more. We’re also just starting to book a tour that will run from June 6th to June 20th where we hope to go as far east as we can, so if anyone wants us to play in their town, feel free to message us on any social media, we always respond (eventually). We’re touring south west and east this June!
Kendra: Will you be one of the bands doing their best to sell to kids at Warped Tour this summer as they wait in line?
Logan: Nah, i think we all maxed out our time we could get off work to be able to tour, so no fun things like Warped for us! Adulthood sucks.
Kendra: If you had to make the “Essential Emo” mix, what five songs would have to be on it?
Logan & Bart Thompson:
Taking Back Sunday – “Bike Scene”
Jets to Brazil – “Chinatown”
The Get Up Kids – “Holiday”
American Football – “But the Regrets are Killing Me”
William Bonney – “No Pizza” (Kind of recent, but this band is good people and very authentic)
