For some reason my eyes missed the part where Ionia was a band and not a pop singer. So you could imagine my confusion when From The Edge: Chapter 1. Delta 32 started and it wasn’t 1. A female singing and 2. Rock music. It hasn’t been that long since I’ve had an eye exam but I guess that’s what you get on MediCal, right?
With my head in the right place, I opened my ears and began my listening adventure with Ionia. What I uncovered was music that fans of Hinder and 30 Seconds to Mars would likely have on their iPod. Songs like “We Shall Overcome” has that Jared Leto minus the ego feel, while “Spitting In The Eyes of Defeat” has a very “I’m a man in eyeliner with a wallet chain” vibe but want to chill with a ballad.
Out of the lot though, I liked the possible dig at bands like Fall Out Boy with “I Hate Long Pretentious Titles And I’m A Hypocrite.” I’m not trying to start beef, but that’s a band well known for the novel-like titles. Anyways, other than the title the most notable part of that track was that certain parts reminded me vocally of Bush’s Gavin Rossdale. Out of the whole record though, the recommended must-listens are “Idea” and “Bitter.” They were the ones I felt best represented them and were truly them.
After mistaking them for a female pop artist, I realized this is a melodic rock band that would fare well with crowds that find themselves between the “Lips of an Angel” and Jordan Catalano. If that’s you, then Ionia is the band you need in your life right now. So make sure to check out Postcards From The Edge: Chapter 1. Delta 32, out now.
