When I see a dance artist or something that’s even close to being tossed on in the club, I pass because that’s not my style. I’m not one to go out on a Friday night and tear up the town because I’d rather be in watching Shark Tank and if it’s a good one, 20/20. However, I am glad that I gave Mark Maze’s Uncomfortable Truths a chance because although his surface may seem like just another club kid, below are layers of a man that provide pop music with a conscious.
Like I said, I expected some very abrupt dance music but then “The Devil May Cry” began and I was a bit confused. Yes, it picked up at certain points but overall it remains a very heartfelt vocal performance. This one was actually more a ballad and a surprising choice to start out with. The surprises kept rolling out as Maze was lyrically stunning and not just talking about going out and partying it up; like I expected. Instead “2nd Best” was about telling someone you’re who you are and proud of it, and “Crying Game” proved that pop artists can be socially aware of their surroundings. I will say that I do wish “Your Bite Was Beautiful” was a bit more aggressive just because of the title. That’s just me nitpicking though.
It’s weird that no matter how old we get, we continue to judge books by their covers but at least with age we’re more likely to open the book up and scan the pages before ruling anything out. I’m glad I snuck a peek at Mark Maze because what I discovered was a pop artist that handled himself well with fine tuned pop that has a hint of R&B and just a dash of dance. If you when Lady Gaga actually sings and just doesn’t show her “Poker Face,” music that pops with a purpose, then check out Uncomfortable Truths, out now.
