Skyler: One Voice

skyler-one-voiceWe started out the year with some indie and this week we’re rolling on to pop constructed in a way that’s far from the dance floor and built more for those who like it served in a singer-songwriter dish. That’s what Skyler has cooking on his record One Voice. Many of the songs prepared and ready for primetime…on cable.

So remember when guys like Ryan Cabrera and that dude who was Secondhand Serenade were around and often played as the backdrop to shows like The Hills? Luckily those don’t exist anymore – not the guys, the shows. Anyways, when One Voice began my head went to the TV schedule and I could hear songs like “Once In A Lifetime” playing as Callie and Brandon took their relationship further than those of us with common sense wanted it go on The Fosters, or when something of that caliber happened on Pretty Little Liars. What I would’ve liked to hear from Skyler is a genuine slow song. One too many times I was fooled, like with “One Voice Sound.” That one, and others, started out slow but quickly built and by the chorus was a powerhouse. Speaking of, that’s all that can be said about “Break My Fall.”

If you were a fan of those artists that I mentioned earlier, then you will like these guys even more because it’s more on the refined side of pop. While it has that catchy side, Skyler sits a level above what those guys were doing and why wouldn’t he? It’s like a decade later. If this has peaked your interest, check out Skyler’s One Voice, out now. Then if you’re in the LA area, check him out live at Genghis Cohen on January, 15.
