It’s never good to wake up stressed at the start of a new week but alas, that is my life. So as my tissue pile continues to grow and the tears fuse with the flow from my nose – I’m trying to wrap my head around The Unlikely Hero’s The Road That We Travel because no matter what my mood is, this is a pretty damn good record. It’s refreshing pop punk that feels like the middle sibling between the precocious pop rock of All Time Low and the reality bites albums churned out by The Wonder Years.

I’ll start by saying the record wasn’t perfect. The singing at the start of “We’re All Mad Here (Welcome o The Crew)” wasn’t my cup of tea and I felt like it was a bit weak, BUT then “A Traveling Song” came and redeemed the slow song factor. Anyways, you had the woes of growing up in “I Guess This Makes Me Captain…” and a dose of reality in “Keep To The Code” with the stellar line, “It’s not the town that you come from, it’s the people that you become.” That reminded me a bit of something With The Punches would toss out (RIP great band). The best though has to be where The Road begins, “The Kid Who Never Did Anything Right.” It really captures the band as a whole and is a really great definer.

While my mood is a bust, this record is a must for those who enjoy pop punk that’s not too young, but not too abrasive. It’s right in the center of the spectrum and a good time. So check out The Unlikely Hero’s The Road The We Travel, out July 22nd.
