With no more ice-cream in my possession, I’ve had to deal with the breakdowns the old fashioned way – with just music. So I channeled my inner high school self and sat down with Dikembe and The Jazz June’s Split. Easy and to the point with one song each I thought I was going to have it easy – instead each played a few dozen times before I could fully grasp something to say.
Let’s start with Florida’s Dikembe and their “Healer Of The Pride.” They go on and on in a somber tone about how “everyone gets saved,” but all I could wonder was – when will I? Musically this one was sad but had that little inkling of hope, while The Jazz June’s “Over Underground” proved to be somewhat the opposite with instrumentation that played a little lighter over words that felt a little darker. Just with how I’ve felt this week, this one was the one played most on repeat. Basically it’s that feeling of someone not giving you the chance you know you deserve…
The sorrow in Dikembe comes from the music, while it sits in between the words of The Jazz June. Together they created Split, one that balances one another out with two evenly matched tracks, that’s out May 27. These are just little tastes of what’s to come from Dikembe’s sophomore out this summer on Tiny Engines, and The Jazz June’s upcoming release on Topshelf.
