Yesterday I found myself at my laziest. You know those days where Netflix is your only true friend? Yeah, some Spaced and Adventureland kept me company for most of the day. A day filled with nothing else, so why the hell am I feeling like Daisy in Spaced and finding myself unable to write anything down? It’s not that I didn’t like Signals Midwest’s Light on the Lake, it’s just that it didn’t cause me to say anything more than, well that was nice but…
…I need more? It’s a good record and I say that because it’s well made and doesn’t sound like something one would toss together in the back of their closet, only to forget about it. Signals Midwest take the idea of punk but place it on top of an indie sound to display music that’s both edgy but polished. Take “308” for example, when it started I thought I was getting an ode to Finch’s “Grey Matter” but then it took on its own life, never amping up like “Grey” – remaining soft. If I went through and played favorites, I’d go with “A Room Once Called Yours” based on the fact that it’s the one I would head back to during each run and “St. Vincent Charity” because I liked the concept behind the lyrics. We all have those people we know but don’t really know.
I’ve broken my Daisy curse enough to jot these words down but can I make it through the rest of my writing list? I’ll likely take a break, give “A Room Once Called Yours” once more and move on to the next. If you like bands that are like The Casket Lottery and The Menzingers, then check out Signals Midwest. Light on the Lake is out on Tiny Engines October 22nd.
