mindy-gledhill-pocketful-of-poetry-reviewHave you ever spent a random hour going through Facebook, comparing your life to people you occupied high school with only to end up feeling defeated? That was me about an hour ago. 60 minutes back from this point my self esteem was gravitating towards nonexistent and then I decided to get a head start on the week and Mindy Gledhill’s Pocketful of Poetry was an instant, musical antidepressant. How could I stay upset when her sweet blend of indie, pop and folk was flowing through me like rays of sunshine?

Where do I begin? Let’s see I’ll say that while Mindy’s voice is a delight no matter what, I favored the lighter songs over ones like “Little Red Bike” and “Honey.” They weren’t the positive notes that kept me from scrolling past a sea of familiar Facebook faces like “Trouble No More.” Mindy could sing the words that construct fairy tales thanks to the way she romanticizes the innocence of love in songs like “Oh No” and “Picture Show.” Lastly, the reason I even started to review this in the middle of the night instead of in the morning was because of the title track. “Pocketful of Poetry” isn’t just the soundtrack for musicians and songwriters, but all creative minds. Office life, it’s not for us – thanks Mindy, now I have to add this onto my playlist tentatively titled, “Songs that I Didn’t Write but I’m Sure Were Written About Me.”

Artists like Mindy Gledhill sing about life in a way that sounds forever wholesome and it’s like a warm cup of coffee in that it’s both refreshing and heartwarming at the same time – or so I’ve been told that’s what coffee’s like. I’ve never had a cup. So for me it’d be like hot cocoa. Thankfully Mindy was able to keep me away from the abyss that is Facebook for the rest of the night and if you’re in need of a musical distraction or happen to like artists like Sara Bareilles and Melanie Martinez then this girl’s for you. Pocketful of Poetry is out now.
