Lizzie Davis: Latitudes

lizzie-davis-latitudes-reviewWoke up with no motivation to write today, but I perked up enough energy to decorate a bare wall while listening to Frank Turner and then looked at who was on my list of reviews. I wanted to stay in the calm mood that dude created, so I tossed on Lizzie Davis’ Latitudes in hopes that she would not only continue the laid back atmosphere I’d created for the day, but be the right choice to review for today. She did and was.

It’s really easy to come right out and say who Lizzie Davis sounds like, but I’ll keep that until later. Her voice has an antiquity to it that lands between modern folk and a delightful songbird. Not every song made my day, but there were a few that I’d like to point out if you don’t mind. “Geography” was light and airy, as was “Summer Days,” and then there was my favorite “All About the Weather.” The way Lizzie continued to say “pretty figurines” reminded me of delicacy of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.

Latitudes is a pretty record that sounds grown up thanks to the way Lizzie can manipulate each song with her voice. Sometimes the mood is playful and other times things get serious. If you’re a fan of She & Him or Rilo Kiley, then Lizzie Davis is for you. Latitudes is out September 24th.
