chevonne-and-the-fuzz-fire-at-will-reviewLate last year I was sitting in a diner like situation waiting to interview Chevonne who’d just gotten done with her time on NBC’s The Voice. Honestly I rarely remember contestants on any of those shows because frankly there’s too many and little tend to make an impression. That wasn’t the case with Chevonne though. She had this larger than life voice and hair to match, plus her back story of singing with Lady Gaga helped jog my memory of her. So we did the interview, I tossed some cash her way on her Kickstarter and here we are today. Now she’s joined by a full band in a week’s time Chevonne and The Fuzz will be releasing their debut EP Fire At Will. In our interview she said three words that’d describe this album would be rabble-rouser, pop tart and hair band. Did she and The Fuzz do it? Let’s find out.

Okay so hair band, you think of Van Halen and such. While I didn’t hear that on Fire At Will, I did hear where the influence was coming from on tracks like “Burn Out.” This one, along with “One More Time,” which has that rabble-rouser element, both stood out as the frontrunners of the album; Top 40 pop for grown-ups. Then there was the sentiments worth mentioning, both cliché and original. “Your Guitar” was nothing new, but “Heels” was all its own. Dear RuPaul’s Drag Race, here’s one for you. Come and get it! Last one I want to note is “Ugly Boy.” This one was unlike any of the others in that it was straight lighthearted pop, almost 50’s jukebox in a way. Just because it didn’t fit in, doesn’t mean I didn’t like it…I did, a lot.

Last year Chevonne was competing for a reality singing competition title and this year she’s managed to crowd fund and album with her new band and make it sound just the way she wanted it to. Chevonne and The Fuzz’s Fire At Will will get a party started, has some sexy pop to it and is a reminder of her hair band love. Fire At Will is out September 17th.
