off-the-record-off-the-record-reviewThe reality of right now is that I should be in bed. I have a big job interview that I’m not prepared for but instead I’m sitting here having a “you’re going to blow it like you do everything else” party. These kinds of parties suck. There are no balloons or cake, but the upside is that the playlist is kicking at this one. Off The Record isn’t a band I had presented to me. I went and searched out a new record to review for today and this is what I came across. It’s pop punk reminiscent of CDs you’d get after shows a decade ago. It’s not perfect, but has a nostalgic feeling that I can’t help but smile at.

For someone my age, “Dear You Summer” could be the song you walk into when you decide to hit up a local show. You haven’t done this in years and you’re not sure why you’re there, but you’re glad you went because the music is simple to the point that you learn it easily and think, I like this. If Drive-Thru was still going strong, I’d say Off The Record would be one of their smaller bands they’d place on tour with The Starting Line. They’d kill every night with “A Night At The Roxbury Just Ain’t Gonna Cut It.”

In a nutshell, you can tell Off The Record is the band’s first release because it could use some tightening here and there, but all in all it’s enjoyable. Trust, I’ve heard some pretty, um…interesting things in the years that I’ve been doing this that make me think people are using Talkboys to make records. Off The Record is not one of those bands. So if you like simplistic pop punk, then check them out. I’m not sure where because they’re harder to find than a baby daddy on an episode of Maury.
