7:15am wake up time. Who do I think I am? I have a show to go to tonight and wanted to get a head start on everything so I actually woke up at a time that normal people do, instead of the unemployed. I’m feeling it too. I misspelled Avril Lavigne’s name, thought I was still sleeping with news of an N’SYNC reunion and then was woken up by Woe, Is Me’s American Dream EP. They kept the post-hardcore, but towards the end softened it up and people like me who love the easy side will forever appreciate it.
American Dream started out like a typical Woe, Is Me record. “Stand Up” and the title track were a mix of audible notes with hardcore bursts here and there. Although I have to say the message of “Stand Up” was loud and clear and I took it with me after the record stopped. It’s about doing what you love for the passion and not the world renowned recognition. That’s something I have to remind myself every day as a little freelancer in an ocean of others. Woe fans will love the first part of the record, but those who want a break from the screams will skip along to the end. “Restless Nights” and “Fine Without You” are both simple and sweet, but run into one another. It’s hard to tell when one stops and the other begins, but if you like one – you’ll like the other. So it’s just one long, good time.
Woe, Is Me continues to surprise me. I thought I’d hate last year’s Genesi[s], but it was okay and today I was shocked to come out really enjoying 3/5 of the tracks on this EP. American Dream is out now on Rise Records and is exclusively at Best Buy and on iTunes.
