Darkhorse: The Engineer

darkhorse-the-engineer-reviewMonday for most generally sucks because most have to get up and go somewhere to earn a living. I, on the other hand, am unemployed and wish I had somewhere to be – most of the time. Being enclosed for months can drive a person to insanity, but I’m trying to stay level with Darkhorse’s The Engineer. This rock record proved to have some strengths but then relied too much on them and played it safe the entire time. The result was an album that’s good, but it could’ve gone a little further to be great.

See “Atlas” is a great song, but that was the peak and it came at the start. It was hard for any song that followed to top it. Some came pretty close, but just close. “Atlas” showcased that there is some extreme vocal talent in Darkhorse. You have to sit back and wonder if there was some gospel background in there, because it’s soulful, yet rock all at the same time. If Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie ever game up the vaudeville and turned to straight up rock, it’d likely sound like Darkhorse. With that being said, the rest sounded more or less the same. All good, but just a couple like “I Saw The Devil” and “Open Water” really stepping away from the pack.

Darkhorse is like a heavier Fall Out Boy (before Jay Z was their bud). The vocals are on point like FOB, but the music takes it above so it’s not placed amongst pop rock records; it’s just rock. If you like your guitars paired with a set of well-oiled pipes, then check out Darkhorse. The Engineer is out August 20th on Easy Killer Records.
