Theories on Dexter and trying to figure out what to wear for a job interview – put that in between listening to Poverty Hollow’s self-titled album and you have my Wednesday morning. I started listening to the record last night, but it was never able to get me that interested, so I turned it off and went to bed. My hope being that by morning I’d have a better understanding of Poverty Hollow. After some sleep I was able to hear the album a little clearer and decided that it was as if you took on teaspoon of grunge and poured it into a huge vat of down trodden indie rock, you’d have Poverty Hollow.
Every other song was a hit for me, well more like a jab. “Concrete” was the strongest and rightfully placed at the start. The vocals were gritty and the music a bit disheveled. I could only imagine this track like the bad boy in a teen movie; a little edgy, but for whatever reason attractive. Then came “Reverie” and it was this downer indie song that proclaimed the “world is dead.” A bummer followed by the only song I was able to connect to, “Rocks” with its laments of loneliness. Ending with a song that was trippier than anything, “Welter” was a story I never quiet understood.
If Poverty Hollow were a test, it’d have gotten an average score. Half was able to distract me from getting ready for the day, while the other half is better left for another. If you like dingy indie rock, then I’d suggest checking this band out ASAP because what else are you doing right now, but if you’re not into that, then move on and leave it to someone else. Poverty Hollow is out now, so I leave you to make your musical decisions now.
