Unsuccessful job hunting and basically being told you’re not great at the one thing you thought you were okay at. That was my weekend, but I’m going to shake off the negatives of my reality to bring you the positivity that is These Hearts’ Yours To Take. If you fused the two main stages of Warped Tour this year, this would be the offspring. No, not the “pretty fly for a white guy” guys, but the spawn of hardcore and pop punk; popcore.
The record has two identities, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde complex. Dr. Jekyll when things play out like a New Found Glory record, and Mr. Hyde when the entire tone of the song takes a drastic turn towards the dark side. For those who like a little of both, then the whole record will find a good home with you, but for those who want more than the other, here are some hints. Those wanting Jekyll, then heads towards the ones I took too easier, “Pyscho,” “Undecided Story” and “Been Through Hell.” Even take the time to slow it down with the gem at the end, “Never Mind Me.” On the other side, you Hyde lovers will appreciate “Last Man Alive” and “War” featuring Mattie Montgomery.
These Hearts is like being given an adorable puppy that has a Cujo mentality. It’s got a light side, but it still has the ability to pack a heavy handed punch. If you’re the type of person who listens to everything from Palisades to What Say You, then you’re likely a good candidate for These Hearts. Yours To Take is out July 9 on Victory Records, so check it out and see if you’re a Jekyll, Hyde or both.
