Every school, at least since the 80’s, has had Goth kids roaming around. I wasn’t into wearing all black in a desert town, but one of my best friends growing up embraced that culture around 7th grade so I became familiar with the haunting sounds of her new musical taste and her new outlook on life. She grew away from Goth in high school, but I think it’s still at her core. All this came to mind as I sat and listened to Mechanical Parts Inside’s Unreal this afternoon. Being me, it wasn’t my style, but I’m sure that if this was 2001 and I was in middle school my friend would’ve been all over Unreal.
There was this 80’s nuance throughout Unreal that was undeniable. Songs like “Human 2.0” and “Upside Down” had this flow of dreamlike vocals surrounded by instrumentation that was never too much. Speaking of the vocals, they sounded so classically trained, it was as if you took an opera singer and placed her in a rock band. At the end I looked back on “Advent” and “Walking Dead” and said to myself, Mechanical Parts Inside is like if Evanescence weren’t so “hard.”
If you’re into alternative rock that has a Goth feel then here’s a heads up on Greece’s Mechanical Parts Inside. They’re not only for my friend’s former self, but for those looking to expand their musical horizons. Unreal is out now, so check it.
