It’s Friday morning and it’s unusual for me to be writing one of these at 11am instead of the middle of the night, but last night Fall Out Boy proved to me that they’re Patrick and Joe are the ones keeping that band afloat so I’m tired from that show, but the reviews must go on. Today I bring you Our Lady, no not Our Lady Peace. I was confused at first as well. Our Lady and their latest Dawning have proven another thing to me, indie-core is a thing and it’s an interesting twist on two polar opposite genres.
When “Inurn” started, I sat there like “oh, this could be R.E.M. or any number of bands from the 90’s who were rock, but not that hard.” Then somewhere between me finishing that thought and an eruption in the song, things changed. Thus, indie-core. That’s pretty much how the remainder of Dawning played out; soft parts surrounded by bursts of aggression. Like always, those who need a quick guide to get a real feel, listen to “Coping” for the lyrics and “Buque” for the overall package deal. That one has the musical elements and the best lyrics about battling one’s self.
This EP is a quick listen but packs a lot of emotion in at the same time. If you like bands like Seahaven and Citizen then you should take some time to introduce yourself to Our Lady. Dawning is out now, so go ahead, don’t be shy.
