Harmful If Swallowed: Allergy

harmful-if-swallowed-allergy-reviewWhen I’m hoping to meet a deadline at night I put in my earbuds to drown out the 2am drivers heading to the 405, and type away. That happens once a week as I can’t deny Golden Girls on repeat. Why aren’t these on during the day? Maybe it’s better they’re not. Then I’d be even more distracted and would never have time to listen to Harmful If Swallowed’s seasoned punk album Allergy.

Almost every track on Allergy is about a girl, not the same one or the same tale retold every which way. “Sabrina ‘Little Angel’” seems to be about a daughter, with lines mentioning the first time she fell down. That seemed to be the only song aimed at a lady that showcased any sort of love. “Allergy” was about a girl being just that, and “Lindsey” was neither here nor there. The best part of the record didn’t come from the lyrics, but the music itself. “Hateful” and “Recession” sounded like it’s been plucked from a skate park in the 90’s; overall punk with catchy choruses to make it pop.

Tonight’s repeat of Golden Girls is one of my favorites, but that’s beside the point as I wrap up my thoughts on Harmful If Swallowed’s Allergy. The lyrical content about the women in their lives wasn’t what I’d come back to this record for. Those into Rancid and The Bouncing Souls might just like what they hear, so if that’s you…Make sure to check out Allergy, out now.
