A year ago my late nights were the symptoms of a disease known as reality. Today I’m happier due to the medication I’ve taken known as “fuck the bullshit.” While I’m not 100%, I’m at least closer to a smile than a frown. Now my late nights are only caused by the amount of writing and reviewing I’ve had the chance to take on since a side effect of my “fuck the bullshit” meds is being a night owl. So while my roommate sleeps to wake for a 9-5, I take the liberty of muting Cheers and listening to Chase The City’s Everything I Never Told You. Their pop punk goes well with the new life I’ve etched out for myself.
Chase This City, if you took your everyday pop punk and tossed in some gravel to break apart any harmonies that might escape, you’d get this band. They don’t sound pretty as they lay out what they have to say in song. “I Could Just Cave Right In” takes a page out of what The Wonder Years have been doing, that pop punk that’s to the tattered and torn in the vocals, showcasing the emotion that’s being put forth, but the music that surrounds every word remains in tip top shape. Last year (and as soon as my “meds” wear off) I would’ve sang loud and proud along with “Washington and East” because it’s one of those songs. You know, the ones that are about being fed up, breaking down and then have a realization in the end about well, let’s just steal a line from the song…“do what you love and fuck the rest.” Did I write that 365 days ago…
Both Chase This City and I know that you have to do what you want in life or it’s not worth it at all. That’s what I took from this late night/early morning ride with Everything I Never Told You. I hope I never stop taking those “meds” I’m on and I hope that if you’re into bands like Last Call and Forever Came Calling that you’ll check out Chase This City’s Everything I Never Told You, out May 7th.
