The fact that I’m closer to 30 than 20 has been eating at me this past week. That age, it’s as daunting as the idea of talking to your crush. Yes, at 26 I still have the mentality of a junior high girl. If you’re wondering, I do have a crush and he is an asshole for not answering my Facebook messages. See, I’m not mature enough for certain things; dinner parties, adult stores (we’ll circle back to that, promise) and bands like Tauk and their album Homunculus. When I hear music that’s 100% instrumental and sounds like it could be played in the background of a movie I’d never understand because it had subtitles, I appreciate it, but I know it’s not for me.
In case you missed that, Homunculus is an instrumental album through and through. While all the songs could sound the same to someone not paying that much attention, I was able to pinpoint the differences in them. The only similarity between all of them was that I think I could like them if I were a bit more mature. “Afro-Tonic” was my time on cruise ship, celebrating a wedding anniversary. “Hello Narwhal” was a bit sci-fi intertwined with a hotel lounge band vibe AKA Trekkie on vacation. “Dirty Mouth” had a fitting title as, I said we’d get back to it, it sounded like the music you’d hear in one of those late night Cinemax movies. Not like I know anything about such things…Mom, please don’t stumble upon this…
Today I plan to take my Diary of a Wimpy Kid board game and sit in line to see Paramore. So it’s safe to say that I’m a long way away from popping in Tauk’s Homunculus. The instrumentation’s nothing to doubt or put down, I’m just not at that point in my life where I can say, hey, that’s for me! But if you’re into bands like GSol and Gypsy Kings, then make sure to check out Homunculus, out now.
