Spent the last hour of my first day as a 26 year old complaining about a character on CW’s Arrow, and thinking about how excited I am that tomorrow’s Vampire Diaries is 99% Klaus. I swear I’m not lying about my age, but maybe I am young at heart since I can grasp onto a CW show filled with shirtless ripped men easier than I can a record like Only Living Boy’s Cool Collected Headcase. It’s not that it’s a bad album, it’s just my mentality isn’t old enough to appreciate where it’s coming from; a rock era that most of my peers have a better love for.
When Cool Collected Headcase started, I felt as if I were in a cloud of smoke. Oh no, it wasn’t this Snoop Dogg like music. It was more like I was transported somewhere between Lollapalooza and Woodstock. Only Living Boy exude a 70’s aroma in their sound. It’s that rock that’s a little muzzled and heavy on the instrumentation, but incorporates the blues into it. Words are my personal thing, and “I Beg Your Pardon” was hard for me to understand when it came to the vocals, and while I could make out the words to others like “Up Down” and “Cool Collected Headcase,” I failed to hear the message. It never failed, with every song I relied on the music to help me drift into the Only Living Boy realm.
If you listen to music for just that, the music, then Only Living Boy may be up your alley. I am not one for this style, but if you like bands that have found a way to mold together rock, blues with a hint of psychedelics, then by all means, check out Cool Collected Headcase, out April 30th.
