What Say You: Potentials

what-say-you-potentials-reviewIt’s the eve of my 26th birthday as I write this words down, and instead of heading out for a pre-party situation, I’m sitting alone with Rugrats and my thoughts on What Say You’s Potentials. The CD was handed, among many, to me and my friends as we stood recapping the show we’d just seen one night at Chain Reaction. I might be one of the few who actually love to get these little mementos. As I do listen to them and in this case take some time to review. It was fitting that leaving New Found Glory, I’d be handed a pop punk record…What Say You knows their target audience, don’t they?

It seems to be the fashionable thing to do to start your record off with a quick song, never exceeding a minute. “Hold Tight” was just that for Potentials. I liked the 30 seconds for what it was, but have to ask the boys, will we ever hear an extended version? If so, sweet deal. I’ll be looking forward to it. if not, I’ll just play this on repeat a few more times. A couple of songs that I didn’t have to wish to be longer and were just write were “Make This Right” and “Colfax.” Both seemed to be tales of a guy going after his dreams, the skeptics and the realization that he’s going to be alright. Origin stories aren’t just for superheroes.

Whichever guy from What Say You that interrupted me and my friends to hand us CDs, thank you. It’s not hard to categorize this EP as pop punk and stick it on the shelf along with bands like Handguns and This Time Next Year, because that’s what it sounds like…Simple as that. So if that’s your poison, pick up Potentials, out now.

  1. […] a heavy handed punch. If you’re the type of person who listens to everything from Palisades to What Say You, then you’re likely a good candidate for These Hearts. Yours To Take is out July 9 on Victory […]
