Adelaine: Currents

Adelaine-Currents-reviewEvery few months I go through a Jagged Little Pill phase where that’s the only album I deem worthy for a week straight. Last time I was in my Alanis binge, I decided to make my own “Punk Goes Jagged” playlist and placed each song with a female fronted band I thought would do it justice. Today I’m mad because then I wasn’t aware of Adelaine and if I had been, they would’ve been on there along with other bands like Arrows Over Athens thanks to their clear cut rock sound that brings forth musical notes about everything from bad habits to lost innocence on their latest, Currents.

As a whole, Currents is a solid piece of work with some dings here and there. There was a moment in the middle where a trio of tracks just stuck together strong. I named them the “power players.” “We’ve Got it Now,” “Antidote” and “I Once Knew” were songs that I felt would be the ones sent out to represent the band as a whole on a mainstream plain. The soldiers if you will, fighting for Adelaine’s good name in the music game. After those, the songs to follow left me hanging a bit and I couldn’t keep my thoughts on them as they played; “Every Once in a While” and “Let Go.”

“Two Cents” had a Warped tone to it, I could imagine myself walking past this song playing from the Ernie Ball stage and stopping for a moment to take in the band it was coming from. Then there are my two personal favorites. “Square One” mentions returning to the child one once was. All I could think was take me with you! Being an adult has its ups, but just as many downs. After all the rock, I thought once I hit the slow song, I’d just forget about it, but it turned out to be the best. “Home” was the one song I felt as it was sung. There was a sentiment in the vocals that made you want to climb through the speakers and hug the girl on the other side of the stereo.

The next time I head down my Alanis road, I’ll be thinking of Adelaine. I didn’t know this band existed before they hit my inbox, but I’m glad Currents has found a home in my music catalogue and if you’re into bands like The Material and June Divided, you’ll want to adopt this record too. Currents is out April 30th.
