If time travel were possible, I’d want to head back to the 50’s and the 70’s. Okay, so I’d definitely visit more decades, centuries and time periods, but first on my list would be those two. 70’s because I love the colors and the fashion, and the 50’s because I’m still mad my mom didn’t get me a poodle skirt when I was younger. Yes, 20 years later and I’m still upset about it. Anyways, since I don’t have a DeLorean on hand, listening to Penny Blacks’ The Silver Screen is as close to the 1950’s as I’m going to get. See this EP has that flare and will transport you there if you’re a sucker for vintage.
While song like “Gentlemen Marry Brunettes” and “Our Old Rooms” would sit well more with my mom than my 13 year old niece, that’s not to say youths wouldn’t appreciate Penny Blacks. It’s just more likely that it’d be those kids out there who have a knack for yesteryear and all it involves. You know, those kids who dress like they’re in an adaptation of The Outsiders; do it for Johnny! Those kids are the ones The Silver Screen is aimed at, them and their parents who love to find music that reminds them of the good ol’ days.
Penny Blacks’ style is crisp, clear, and will resonate with anyone who enjoys those concerts in the park series that their local park hosts in the spring and summer months. It’s that music that doesn’t offend anyone, it’s just nice to listen to and sounds like it could be straight from a beat-up jukebox you found in pawn shop, bought and took home to tend to. If you’re a fan of music that could be on Sandra Dee’s playlist, then The Silver Screen is for you and is out now.
