four-minute-mile-bridges-streetlights-reviewEveryone is scared of something, and when that fear is near we can’t help but get that aching feeling in our stomachs and hope to any higher power that we can face it…Or get away from it fast. For a lot of my friends it’s spiders. For me it’s being in vehicles, gorillas, and the mile. A fat kid always and forever, P.E. was the most horrible thing growing up and the mile took the crown for “worst things we could do in class today.” So when I even gazed upon Four Minute Mile’s name, I got that cold sweat I experienced from 6th-8th grade, but had to shake it off and run the course of their latest EP, Bridges/Streetlights.

Their brand of pop punk is more on the harder side of the scale, but at the same time it’s not as course as say a Wonder Years record. It lacks what a lot of bands today have going on in terms of stressing the pop of the genre, but it’s not as rough as Soupy’s vocal style. Yes, it’s got its share of songs about girls and heartbreak thanks to tracks like “Sunburnt,” but it’s the style in which they are sung that make Bridges/Streetlights sits pretty in the middle of the pop punk scale.

With the idea that I’d be left on a track running the mile, I kept getting sidetracked every time “Camellia” played, so that’s not good. That wasn’t the case when it came to “Grey” and “Heisenburg” though. Pretty sure both can be added to the heartbreak pop punk catalogue, but thanks to their choruses, they reigned supreme on Bridges/Streetlights.

I’m still looking around shifty eyed, like my middle school P.E. teacher is going to pop up and tell me to head up to the track, so thanks for that Four Minute Mile. I can at least sort of forgive them for giving me a couple new songs to add to my weekly playlist thanks to their EP Bridges/Streetlights. If you’re into bands like The American Scene and Forever Came Calling, then you’re going to want to check out Four Minute Mile. Bridges/Streetlights is out now on Better Day Records, and remember after you get the record to face at least one fear of yours. Unless you fear gorillas, then just don’t.
