Almost a year ago I was at a job I loved at first, but slowly grew to hate every morning I’d walk in the door. The greatest thing to come out of it was the friend I made and the bands I met along the way. The Material was one of them. I emailed hundreds of bands each week, so it was natural to forget most of them, but there was something about The Material that always sat well with me. Now years after our initial email, here we are with their new album Everything I Want to Say. I personally want to say this a pop rock record because usually that’s where my mind goes when I hear a female lead, but there was a bit more, um…passion in the vocals and the music was all-around more heavier than your typical female fronted band, so all that makes this a rock album with a lighter side.
Everything I Want to Say started out just okay for me. Their lead single “Life Vest” landed in the middle for me, as did and “Tonight I’m Letting Go.” The good news is though that those are the only ones I felt that way about and there are 7 more tracks on the record to check out. You may or may not disagree, but let’s move on to the songs that kept me going back for more.
All throughout Everything I Want to Say, I heard themes of being free and love. Now, they’re not saying their love is for free, especially in the star of the record, “Skin and Bone.” That song says quite the opposite, her loves not for sale ladies and gentlemen. “Skin and Bone” was the song I felt was performed with the most desire compared to the rest of the record. You could feel every word and sound coming from this one. It’s not to say other tracks like “Love Me or Leave Me” and “Let Me In Again” weren’t as great, but they didn’t exactly pack the same punch.
Another one to shout out is “Born To Make A Sound.” This obvious band anthem was about not giving up and doing what they see fit for their selves. I always love a good sort of biographical track about the band as a whole, instead of individual tales. Makes you feel the unison of The Material.
There were some bumps in the road to Everything I Want to Say, but in the end I got a lot of songs about freedom and love, as well as some that oozed a healthy dose of oomph that made them memorable long after I switched on last night’s Shameless. It’s been a couple years since The Material has entered my life, but I want you to let them enter yours if you’re a fan of bands like Darling Parade and Evarose, then check out The Material. Everything I Want to Say is out April 9th, now that’s all I have to say about that.
