falling-still-falling-still-reviewDuring commercials and boring parts of the Oscar red carpet coverage, I find refuge in Falling Still’s self-titled EP. As Ryan Seacrest continued to be the smallest man in the press line, I ignored his E! co-host because her voice is like screeching cats in heat; playing Falling Still in an earbud. It was clearly an alternative album that took a page out of the 90’s playbook and tossed in some modern indie to make a record that was good enough to help me escape Giuliana Rancic’s voice, but not necessarily something I’d pop in all the time.

By now I’ve been distracted by the Oscars actually starting, but that’s okay. I find time to write my thoughts about Falling Still between all the ins and outs; thoughts like, did this album come from the depths of the early 90’s? Songs like “If U Stay” and “Stupid Girl” make it sound as if Falling Still were once opening up for Everclear some 20 years ago. This isn’t a bad thing if you like that style of alternative rock.

Other thoughts that crossed my mind as Channing Tatum danced across the Oscar stage were where did this come from? Not Channing, but “Thin Lizzy.” This song was a total 360 from anything else on Falling Still.  It verged on folk with a hint of indie pop. The last thought that crept out was about “Laid to Waste.” That song really captured the youth in Falling Still’s aesthetic, and showed they weren’t fully an Everclear opener, but a band that is able to handle today’s market as well as be a nostalgia throwback.

Sitting around and watching TV is what I do best. I can sit through a Golden Girls marathon for days on end, but I often feel guilty for not being productive. So today I was thankful for Falling Still’s self-titled EP being a good commercial cushion for me. So if you’re into alternative bands like Better Than Ezra and of course Everclear, then check out Falling Still, out February 26th.
