When you sit down and really compare and contrast your friends, they always fall into two categories. The categories, more or less, are the same for everyone. There are the friends you have who you do crazy shit with, like spending $100 on a rabbit skeleton; fun friends. On the other side of the room at the party lay your more serious set of friends who talk about shit like the future and rent control (whatever that is). As always, this is what led me to this mini rant…While I was listening to Everlyn’s A Ticket To The Moon, I got the feeling the songs were unevenly split into those two friends categories; upbeat pop rock VS the songs that’d play during the pivotal moment of a teen drama. Like in life, I had to choose who the better sets of friends were.
Though the slower songs weren’t winning in terms of number, they had a lot of strength thanks to the vocal abilities of Everlyn’s lead singer Karol. Songs like “3 Years Ago” and the ballad of sorts, “Vortex” really showed off the pop in the music. See, told you there were few, so it wasn’t really enough to make me want to call upon these songs for a hang sesh.
That leads us to the good time pals; the songs that added the rock to Everlyn’s pop. First off, the fragile voice that Karol sometimes has reminded me of Sixpence None the Richer, if they had gone a little more alternative in their sound. Since there were plenty of fun friends to choose from on A Ticket To The Moon, I decided that if I were throwing a slumber party and wanted to exceed the amount of coolness we had I’d invite the following three.
“Pointless Road” for picking me back up after “Vortex,” “Analogies” for being the one who is great but sticks in the middle of the action and then “Dreams Are For Those Who Sleep.” “Dreams” is definitely the most popular of the gang and with that friend, uh, I mean song, you can’t go wrong. If that song was on a compilation, it’d be the one to make me investigate who Everlyn was. All three of those songs are “don’t you dare skip” when listening to A Ticket To The Moon.
The lighter parts of A Ticket To The Moon were the key factors of me wanting to keep the friendship going. If you’re a fan of Arrows Over Athens or Hey Monday then you’ll be into Everlyn’s pop rock antics on their latest, out February 26th. Check it out and make a new friend.
