The goal for this week was to retrain my body to wake up early and not need sleep. I said I’d go to bed after I caught up on Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls. With my last laugh having occurred about 40 minutes ago, I lied to myself once again. So instead of taking some pills to fall asleep (don’t worry, I’m that hardcore…it’s allergy meds), I decided to give As They Burn’s Will, Love, Life a spin. It’s not necessarily what I wanted to hear before bed, a little heavier than what I’m used to, but if you’re a fan of today’s metal scene, then by all means, this is for you.
The music is clearly metal. That’s apparent within the first 10 seconds of “Medicine 2.0.” It goes on declaring a “waste of time” but really, if you like bands like The Acacia Strain then this is worth any time you have. As They Burn’s hip hop influence isn’t as prevalent as their other ones; Korn and The Deftones. “Frozen Vision Part 2” has a Deftones like break in the middle, while the spooktacular ending to “Sons of Shiva” reminded me of Korn and all the gothic kids in high school who loved them.
Other than that, each song played like another piece to a well-constructed puzzle; sometimes too ceaselessly which made it seem like one, long continuous track at times.
It is 10 minutes before my new bedtime of 1am, and I’m pretty happy about that. I know that my dreams will be a little darker tonight thanks to the intimidating metal sounds of As They Burn’s Will, Love, Life though. Fans of Oceano and I Declare War are advised to check out Will, Love, Life, out now on Victory Records.
