Everyone has a personality, well scratch that. Almost everyone has a personality, and while we’re told “don’t judge a book by its cover,” it’s pretty easy to fall victim of this. I mean look at Fifty Shades of Gray. I’m judging that up and down the coast and I’ve cracked it open once in a Barnes & Noble, felt like a pervert and ran off to the clearance bins. So I do judge everything from the second I see and hear it. So when it came time to listen to My Gold Mask’s Leave Me Midnight, I was pretty quick to judge and draw my own conclusion as to what kind of people enjoyed this indie rock band that plays heavy with the electronic side of life.
The album opens with “Never Go Home” and sounded pretty similar to the way Glee starts. If you’ve never seen it (you’re not alone) just watch the first minute and know that after the rambling recap, there’s this weird “it’s starting” noise. That’s the same one I heard in “Never Go Home,” but after that My Gold Mask was nothing like the FOX show that’s gone downhill since they allowed the “kids” to grow up. The music actually made me think I was listening to Florence and The Machine. There were even moments that were Bjork like, take “Some Secrets” for example. That’s a wonderful thing if you love Bjork, and a horrible thing if you aren’t her biggest fan (that’s me).
Other than sounding like two female powerhouses at times, My Gold Mask did their own thing with “I, Animal” and “In Our Babylon.” Both songs painted the picture of the people I pegged would be fans of their music; artsy folk who attend the Hollywood Bowl because other concerts are too mainstream, this is all ironically of course. Other than watching Girls, people who would warm up to My Gold Mask would also enjoy the way this band is able to turn songs into backdrops for a twisted dreams. Listen to “Nightfalls” and “Song Of Wound” and tell me they don’t sound like the soundtrack to a dream where you’re running naked in slow motion through a field of every embarrassing moment you’ve ever had, but you welcome it, as long as it stays a dream.
No matter how hard you try, you will judge something or someone today. Today I just happened to have My Gold Mask’s Leave Me Midnight in my digital hands, so I had to judge it; not too harshly though. I just assume who listens to music every day and when it comes to My Gold Mask, Allison Williams is the poster girl for their fanbase; artsy, indie and into the latest music that’s not too in your face. Leave Me Midnight is out February 19th, so check it out if you like Florence and The Machine and Hotpipes.
