Irontom: The Loose

irontom-the-loose-reviewIt’s hard to find people who are 100% satisfied with their surroundings. I don’t think I can go one day without hearing a friend hate on their current state and wish they were anywhere but California. I don’t know why because this place seems fine to me, but alas people in my life continue to hold other places in such high regards and are continuously influenced by the ones they’ve either called home for a minute or never at all. That’s what I thought when Irontom’s The Loose started playing and I read they were heavy into the Britpop scene and influenced by it. Why not just take from the local LA scene? I mean, that’s what I heard in The Loose; Silverlake charm with a dash of a young Muse (British, but the rock variety).

Keeping with Muse, so I don’t forget to bring it up later, “Mind My Halo” is where that style came in to play. If Muse were more indie and less rock of course, but it’s more the way the vocals do that drawn out Matt Bellamy thing than the music that made me think of Muse. I’d pass up “Goin Slow” because it sticks true to the title and is a slow one, that doesn’t hold its own compared to the others, and “My Brothers” paints a vivid picture of who likely listens to Irontom; middle class and white. However, I’m neither of those things, and I found a track to hold on to, “Lady Got Me.”  I wondered who that lady was, and thought she must be a catch to get the cool bounce the song encases.

When it came to Irontom’s The Loose I heard a piece of LA, the Silverlake edition; indie rock that takes a page out of the British book when it comes to some vocal delights that liken them to Muse. The Loose is out now, and you can catch Irontom at SXSW in March.
