I swear my mentality shifts to my high school mindset and I revert to my bitter teen self when I have to head back to my mom’s for the holidays. Four days in the small town riddled with too many people who’ve given up has caused me to sit at this blank slate of a document for the past two hours. Annabel’s Youth In Youth was the background noise to my inner thoughts as nothing exited my fingers to the keyboard. Their indie clad music with interesting concepts of life, but even more interesting titles was a stepping stone to get me back into my writing mode.
Most of Youth In Youth escaped me. “At Least For Now” and “You Could Be Living Better” weren’t able to spark a fire in me and just played on a loop until I noticed they were there. That wasn’t the case with every song though. “The Age Of Possibilities” not only had a title fitting for a Humanities 101 essay, but the ideas within that talked about how thinking about everything being connected and perspectives also gave this music an educated feel to it.
Aside from the textbook sounds, there was another one that stuck out, “Home.” While I hate being stuck in the place I was raised, I can’t help but hold a piece of it near my cold heart. That’s what Annabel’s song reminded me of. They shouted out the Midwest, and mentioned complaining, and that’s how I always feel about my hometown. It might be a place I don’t want to be, but it’s always and forever a part of me.
Thanks Annabel for helping me get back into my nightly routine of writing with The Office muted (I can swoon John Krasinski at any volume). They’re brand of indie isn’t necessarily for me due to it being a little too serious for my taste, but if you’re a fan of The Shins or Modest Mouse then feel free to check out Annabel and enjoy. Youth In Youth is out now on Count Your Lucky Stars, so pick it up for yourself if no one bothered to give you new music this holiday season.
