Who has a parent who isn’t obsessed with one or a few reality shows? Not a normal one. My mom loves The Voice, Idol and America’s Got Talent, and even though I told her I don’t watch any of those but The Voice, she continues to talk to me like I do. So I wasn’t surprised she had to tell me about Dani Shay when she appeared on Talent, because of her Justin Bieber like appearance. I then watched on YouTube and developed a bit of a girl crush. Not a strong one though since I missed Dani on the second season of The Glee Project. Guess I didn’t miss much since she went home early, but that only gave her time to go about her own career. Now she has a new record, One: The Winter EP. It’s got a singer/songwriter feel with some pop attributes laid in.
“Holding On” is very uplifting. You can tell Dani wants to portray a positive image with her style and sound, much like a younger Colbie Caillat. It’s just one of those songs you hear on the radio that puts you in a better mood. That good image she creates with her music comes in handy since she’s working with FUN’s The Ally Coalition to help create awareness and raise funds to support the LGBTQ community. Her song “One” was actually featured video on The Ally Coalition site, and showcased Dani’s relationship with her Glee Project costar Ali Stroker. “One” is a cute song from one to another, but the only odd thing is the counting part towards the end. It makes the song switch gears in terms of the pace, which creates a weird vibe.
Those are just the original songs on the record, there’s also a third song that everyone should recognize. In the spirit of the winter holiday Dani did a cover of “Let It Snow.” It’s a Glee like cover, which means you can picture Dani singing this with a huge camera ready smile in between Chris Colfer and Darren Criss.
While Dani Shay has this sweet sound like Colbie, she also reminded me a little of a Canadian pop rock artist, Stephanie Bosch. One: The Winter EP is for fans of those aforementioned ladies as well as anyone who fell for Dani when she appeared on America’s Got Talent and The Glee Project. She hasn’t changed much since her appearance on reality TV, and has stayed consistent with who she is musically.
