Golden Mixtape

It’s hard for me to concentrate on anything this morning as my mind is still wrapping itself around last night’s Dexter, but I am trying really hard to write about the loss of a Latin starlet, Beyonce’s $50 million Pepsi deal and The Slowdown’s A. With two down and one to go I’m looking over my notes for A and I know that they aren’t a band that I’d ever listen to on my own time. I’m not a 35 year old dude with a wallet chain and a love for 90’s alternative rock. That’s the image that comes across as A continues to play and I wonder if I’ll find something I personally like about it.

Other than Dexter, this past weekend in LA was KROQ’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas, and with friends flooding my social networks with their constant updates, I wished I still cared about that show. It used to be my Christmas present in high school, but now I don’t know half the bands on the lineup. All this comes to mind because The Slowdown reminds me of music that KROQ probably pimped out in the early 90’s, a decade that was all about anguish. Songs like “Left Home” and “Wanderlust” played like an old school KROQ “Furious Five at 9” countdown with their grizzly vocals and music to match.

Those two songs are basically what A is all about. There was never a clear distinction between the songs and they all flowed into one another ceaselessly. It was about an hour of the same tone and story, minus “Whispering Lights.” The music there was a little lighter than the rest.

Thankfully bands like Bush still tour today, so The Slowdown has someone to hit the road with. So if you’re into bands that sounds like Mr. Gwen Stefani and Co. and or Alice In Chains, then you’ll probably like The Slowdown’s A, our December 11^th.
