greeley-estates-narrow-road-reviewYou always wonder what your kids will be like, even if the idea that you’d get pregnant would have to be a religious miracle of sorts because you get as much action as a Kmart next to a Walmart. No matter the case you sit and speculate…Will they be into what I like? Will they be okay with the abundance of 90’s nostalgia in the house? Will they make me take them to Hot Topic and buy them shit I don’t understand much like I made my own mom do? That’s probably the biggest fear…I’ll have a kid who likes music that scares me and they’ll be into bands like Greeley Estates, and want me to buy them albums like Estates new one, The Narrow Road. I’ll then be forced to listen to the screamo style that’s metal and post-hardcore all wrapped up in a bundle that sounds like chaos coming through my speakers.

I like to play pretend, so stick with me as I write this from the future…Grown up me will be in the passenger seat as my husband drives our kid to band practice. Ever since The Narrow Road landed into his hands (after he found it on my hard drive) he’s wanted to play guitar and create music that sounds like a banshee mating with Bert McCracken of The Used. I try to understand “The Narrow Road” and can only make out “…life is a lesson…” and, “…don’t look back…” I guess those are good lessons for my future son to learn from music. Then “Head Under Water” starts and I swear it’s the same song musically. The arrangement sounds similar to the one before, expect this time the words are a little darker. It’s not literally about holding someone under to drown, but about the way people can make you feel suffocated if you hold them back. Since future me let’s their kid express their self in any way, I know this isn’t aimed at me, but I hope that some other parent out there can listen and let their kid have some freedom.

Of course I’d much rather turn on some Good Charlotte, but that’d embarrass my kid so we’d continue to listen to The Narrow Road and I’d squirm in my seat as “Lot Lizards” plays, since I’m reminded of the hookers in my hometown due to the title alone. It’s “Die” that makes me give my kid a look. It’s too brutal for my ears and I want to turn it, but I don’t. I just wish “Die” didn’t make me want to…

Future mom me is much like current me, minus the kid and husband. We are both are too easy going for the hard-hitting ways of Greeley Estates The Narrow Road. But if you’re more into bands like Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Of Mice & Men, then Greeley Estates is right up your alley. The Narrow Road is out now, so pick it up and enjoy.
