It’s been too long since I’ve sat at my desk with new music in my ear. The past few days have been spent on highways and in lines to see New Found Glory, but taking a break before heading out for night 4 of 5 straight days of their Sticks & Stones Tour, I am sitting here with Sea Salt’s Songs You Can Sing Underwater. Sea Salt is one man who sounds like the guy in homeroom who carries a guitar to class every day and sits alone at lunch with a notepad draped in emo like lyrics, singing in an indie fashion.
“Home Siq” has a weird start. I wasn’t too fond of the talking at the beginning, but once the music settled in, I was on board. The rhyme within the choruses is what made this one put a smile on my face. Another one that I liked despite the fact that I’m pretty sure it was about croaking was “Underwater Sleeping.” It was slow and usually that sends a big red flag up for me, but this time I wasn’t waving anything, just listening to this beautifully constructed tune.
Much like Armor For Sleep, Sea Salt has a sad overtone to every song and they don’t smell like a chipper day. The way the man behind Sea Salt, Kurtis Roy, sings each song reminds me of Tom from More Amor. Both of their voices carry a burden that’s released through song. “Dying In Bed Alone” held the biggest similarities to More Amor…Well when More Amor isn’t doing their Mac inspired club like songs, but their more human ones.
Songs You Can Sing Underwater is for fans of music that’s not on its way to being on anyone’s “happy as fuck” mixtape. It’s got a lot of emotion behind it and can be the companion one needs on a day when they’re solo and need something to keep their attentions off the fact that they’re alone while the rest of the world is out and about enjoying reality. Fans of More Amor should take notice of Sea Salt as well as fans of Armor For Sleep, if they want an Armor that’s more indie than rock. Songs You Can Sing Underwater is available for consumption now.
